TDEG Design Process — Melbourne Interior Architecture

Our Approach

Great design doesn’t happen by accident. At TDEG, every project follows a clear, collaborative process — one that keeps you informed, in control, and confident at every stage. From the first conversation to the final documentation, here’s how we work.

💡 Why our process matters: A structured approach removes the guesswork from design and drafting. You’ll always know what stage you’re in, what’s coming next, and how decisions are being made — so there are no surprises and no wasted time.

1. Discover — We Listen Before We Design

Understanding your vision is where everything begins.

In the first stage, we take time to truly understand you — your brief, your lifestyle or business needs, your budget, and your timeline. We ask the right questions, listen carefully, and explore the full scope of your project without assumptions. Whether you’re a homeowner dreaming of a kitchen renovation or a developer planning a commercial fitout, we approach every brief with fresh eyes and genuine curiosity.

This stage includes an initial consultation (free, 30 minutes), a site visit where relevant, and a detailed project brief summary so we’re all aligned before any design work begins. It’s the foundation that makes everything that follows more accurate, more efficient, and more aligned with what you actually want.

What happens in this stage

  • Free 30-minute initial consultation
  • Site visit and measurement (where applicable)
  • Project brief documentation
  • Scope, timeline and budget alignment
  • Introduction to your dedicated designer/draftsperson

2. Define — Turning Your Brief Into a Clear Direction

Clarity before creativity — we set the foundation for great design.

With your brief locked in, we move into the Define stage — where ideas start to take shape. We conduct site analysis, review any existing drawings or documentation, and develop initial space planning concepts. For interior projects, this is where we explore mood boards, material palettes, and design directions tailored to your aesthetic preferences.

For drafting and documentation projects, this stage involves zoning, layout options, and regulatory checks to ensure the design is both inspired and achievable. By the end of this stage, you’ll have a clear design direction, an agreed concept, and a confident understanding of the path ahead — long before drawings are finalised.

What happens in this stage

  • Site analysis and existing documentation review
  • Initial space planning and layout options
  • Mood boards and material palette exploration
  • Regulatory and council requirement checks
  • Concept presentation and client sign-off

3. Design — Where Vision Becomes Reality

This is where the magic happens — precision meets creativity.

The Design stage is where your approved concept is developed into full, detailed design documentation. For drafting projects, this means producing technically precise architectural drawings — floor plans, elevations, sections, and site plans — that are ready for council submission and builder use.

For interior design projects, this stage includes finalising material and finish selections, producing joinery drawings, specifying fixtures and fittings, and creating photorealistic 3D renders so you can visualise the finished space before construction begins. Every detail is considered. Every drawing is checked. We don’t move to the next stage until you’re completely satisfied with the design.

What happens in this stage

  • Full architectural or interior design drawings
  • 3D renders and visualisations (where applicable)
  • Material, finish and fixture specifications
  • Joinery and custom furniture documentation
  • Client review rounds and design refinement

4. Deliver — From Drawings to Done

We see your project through — all the way to approval and beyond.

The final stage is all about execution. We prepare and submit all documentation required for council planning and building permits, coordinate with engineers and consultants, and produce the final contractor-ready drawing packages your builder needs to bring the project to life.

We don’t simply hand over a folder of drawings and disappear — we remain available throughout the construction phase to answer RFIs, issue drawing revisions, and support your builder as needed. Our goal is a smooth, stress-free process from approval to completion, so you can focus on the exciting part: watching your space come to life.

What happens in this stage

  • Council planning and building permit submission
  • Consultant and engineer coordination
  • Final contractor-ready drawing package
  • Construction phase support and RFI responses
  • Project completion review

Our Process at a Glance

Each of the four stages builds on the one before it. Skipping steps or rushing decisions early on tends to create costly issues later — which is why our process is designed to slow down at the right moments and accelerate when momentum matters.

Stage Focus Outcome

2. Define Direction and concepts Approved design concept
3. Design Detailed documentation Full drawing set and specs
4. Deliver Permits and construction support Approved, build-ready project
